Waterways of East Gippsland
A pivotal feature of the region's tourism industry, East Gippsland's
lakes and rivers are regarded as being amongst Victoria's, and Australia's,
most valuable environmental and heritage assets. Water based
recreational
activities and natural attractions relating to East Gippsland's
waterways are an integral part to the region's success as an all year
round premier tourist destination.

East Gippsland's Waterways also provide significant economic value
to the region through irrigation of fertile river flats and
adjacent hill country for agricultural purposes including
dairying, beef production, fodder conservation and horticultural
crops including vegetables, wine grapes and soft fruits.

Catchment Areas

The
Mitchell,
Tambo & Nicholson,
Snowy and
Far East Gippsland River
systems flow to the South Pacific Ocean. To the north of East
Gippsland, the upper reaches of the Mitta Mitta River and it's
tributaries including the Cobungra River, Victoria River and
Livingstone Creek form part of the
Upper Murray Catchment Area.

which have significant nature conservation, recreation, scenic or
cultural heritage attributes. Heritage rivers occur in a variety of
tenures, including National Parks, State & Regional Forests and unreserved Crown land.

River, Buchan River & Suggan Buggan River
