Rising in the
Alpine National
Park on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, the
Wonnangatta River flows through a forested gorge with some cleared
river-flats in the middle reaches near
Crooked River district. The upper reaches of the Wonnangatta River can have low water flow and shallow water
during summer and is accessible only by 4WD. The middle and lower reaches
of the Wonnangatta River are accessible by conventional vehicle along
the
Wonnangatta Road from the
Crooked River
district to
Waterford near
it's merger with the
Dargo River to become the
Mitchell River.
