Mitchell River
Catchment Area
Listed as a heritage river in
1992, the Mitchell River and its tributaries rise in the Alpine Region on
the southern
slopes of the Great Dividing Range and empty into the
Gippsland Lakes near
Eagle Point. Fed by rivers including the
Wonnangatta,
Moroka,
Wongungurra,
Crooked,
Dargo and the
Wentworth River, the Mitchell River is the only major Victorian river that runs wild from its
beginning in the High Country, to its end at the
Gippsland Lakes. The Mitchell River flows
through forested mountains within the
Mitchell River National Park to the coastal plains and the
Mitchell River Flats that extend from
Lindenow to
Bairnsdale.
