Gippsland Lakes
Australia's
largest navigable inland waterway
Fed by
rivers including the
Mitchell,
Nicholson and Tambo
rivers originating in
East Gippsland's
High Country, and occupying over 400 square kilometres, the
Gippsland Lakes are Australia’s largest navigable inland waterway
system. Separated from the ocean by the
Ninety Mile Beach, the Gippsland Lakes extend for 90 km along the
Victorian coast and feature the
Lakes National Park, the
Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park and the
Mitchell River Silt Jetties. The construction of
the permanent entrance to the Gippsland Lakes in the 1890's
guaranteed access for shipping trade between
Melbourne and the ports of Sale,
Bairnsdale and
Bruthen.
