Mitchell River Silt
Jetties
Worlds Second Longest Finger Delta
Starting near
Bairnsdale
and extending 7 km out into Lake
King, and the Gippsland Lakes,
from the mouth of the
Mitchell River,
the Mitchell River Silt Jetties are the second longest digitate
(finger) delta in the world. Being one of the finest examples of
this type of delta in the world, the silt jetties are listed on
the register of the National Estate. No camping is permitted along
the silt jetties. Vehicle access extends nearly the full
length of the silt jetties with parking a short walk from Point
Dawson at the end. The
Bluff Lookout at
Eagle Point
offers an elevated vantage point to view the jetties.
