Raymond
Island Ferry
Crossing
McMillan Strait and providing vehicular and pedestrian access
for residents, trades & services and visitors, the Raymond Island Ferry operates
a regular service between
Paynesville
and
Raymond Island. The first punt linking Raymond Island to the
mainland in the 1890's, serviced the river crossing at Bairnsdale
prior to the construction of the Mitchell River Bridge. In 1903 a
bigger ferry was commissioned. Improvements to carry more
vehicles were made during the 1920's and was converted from
manpower in 1956. With the sinking of the ferry of the day, a new
purpose-built ferry was commissioned and started service in 1969.
The current ferry, built at Port Welshpool, commenced service
around 1995 with the welcomed retirement of the previously
unreliable ferry.
