Raymond
Island Reserve
In 1953, 42 koalas were
relocated from Philip Island and introduced to the 80 ha of
Coastal Manna Gum woodland on Raymond Island. 2004 saw a
population of over 500 koalas existing on the Island in a
situation where a combination of over population and over grazing
was threatening the health and sustainability of the koala
population as well as the woodlands. A translocation
programme reduced numbers to maintain a viable yet visible
population.
