Granite Quarry

The requirement for rock to renew and reinforce the man made entrance to the Gippsland Lakes originally constructed in 1889 saw the opening of The Granite Quarry on Mississippi Creek in 1904. The 13 km of 3'6" gauge light rail from the quarry running along Mississippi Creek to the head of the North Arm near Comers Landing was opened in 1910 and used until the mid 1930's. Blocks weighing up to 5000 kg were extracted and transported to the head of the North Arm. The quality of the granite extracted from the quarry extended the life of the quarry beyond the reconstruction of The Entrance. Additional projects included lakeside works around the town and projects as far away as Melbourne. Works at the quarry ceased in the 1940's and today the disused rail corridor along the Mississippi Creek forms part of the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail.
