Mitchell
River Flats
The fertile Mitchell
River Flats extend from the southern tip of the
Mitchell River National
Park to
Bairnsdale. Farming
activities such as hops,
maize, sugar beet, wheat, oats, vegetables, dairying, beef and sheep have played a
major part in the
history and the economy of the region. Irrigation of the river
flats began in the 1930's with water being pumped from the
Mitchell River. Commercial vegetable
production for processing and the
fresh market, the principal economic use of the flats today, began
in 1960.
