Omeo is an historic goldmining town in the high country 120 km north of Bairnsdale at the junction of the Great Alpine Road and Omeo Highway. Settled along the Livingstone Creek in the southern foothills of The Great Dividing Range, in the heart of the high country, Omeo is the gateway to the snowfields and the Alpine Villages of Dinner Plain and Hotham Heights. Omeo is the centre of an important cattle region which includes the districts of Benambra, Swifts Creek, Ensay and Tambo Crossing.
