Buchan Station was initiated in the late 1830s with the first settlement of the area being around 1840. No detailed survey or further exploration was carried out until the late 1890's. With over 350 caves located in the region two of the finest examples were discovered in the early 1900's. Because of considerable vandalism of the area's caves, the land in the area was reserved by the State Government .
