    • In search of new pastoral opportunities, the area was explored in 1840 by Angus McMillan. Bairnsdale gained importance and grew during the 1850's and 1860's servicing the East Gippsland goldfields as a result of its location on the Mitchell River and shipping access to Melbourne via Lake King and Lakes Entrance
