Gateway to East Gippsland and the Gippsland Lakes
With a population of approximately
11,000, Bairnsdale is 280 km east of Melbourne, at the junction of the
Princes Highway and the
Great Alpine Road. Sited on the
banks of the
Mitchell River,
Bairnsdale is East Gippsland's only city and is the
commercial hub and business centre of East Gippsland. As well as servicing
a wide range of industries in the region including tourism, timber,
horticulture, pastoral activities, manufacturing and food processing,
Bairnsdale offers central access to a number of East Gippsland's features
including lakes and rivers, coastal plains, the high country and alpine
regions, historic areas, national parks, coastline and far east.
